San José State University offers a balanced curriculum and quality instruction for the study of violin, viola, cello, string bass, classical guitar and harp. There are many opportunities for the students to develop their performance, teaching and audition skills through solo performance, chamber music performance, and symphony orchestra. Degrees offered are: Bachelor of Music in performance; Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Credential emphasis; Master of Arts in performance.

Studio Instruction

Instruction is offered by a professional performing faculty. The course of instruction includes studio and degree recitals, available at no fee for music majors, music minors, and participants in the Symphony Orchestra.

 

Chamber Music

Participation and performance in small ensembles is available for all music students and required for the Bachelor of Music students.There are a variety of chamber ensembles that are available to string students. These ensembles are available through the String Master/Chamber Ensemble Class (Mus 160J). All String Master/Chamber Ensemble classes are taught by the Cypress String Quartet.

    Symphony Orchestra

    The Symphony Orchestra provides a balanced experience of symphonic repertoire, orchestra-choral repertoire, accompaniment of student and faculty soloists, opera workshop, sight reading of symphonic repertoire, student compositions, student orchestrations, and work with student conductors.

     

    Classical Guitar/Harp

    Students in classical guitar and harp receive private studio and ensemble instruction.

     

    Music Minor

    String players pursuing a music minor may participate in any of the performing groups of the school, subject to audition. String players who participate in the Symphony Orchestra are eligible to enroll for studio instruction.
