Teacher Certification
B.M. with Music Education Concentration
The Fifth Year
M.A. with Music Education Emphasis
Special Features of the Program
Teacher Certification
The San Jose State University School of Music and Dance offers
a program for the preparation of K-12 music teachers that has
been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
and the National Association of Schools of Music. Graduates
of this program are in demand throughout the state in public
and private education, and there is currently a 100% success
rate in their job placement.
B.M. with Music Education Concentration
Students who plan to enter the music teaching profession complete
a four-year undergraduate degree program and a fifth year of
study in the College of Education. Private study in voice or
on an instrument, four years of participation in SJSU's critically
acclaimed ensembles, and solo and chamber ensemble appearances
in a variety of recitals assures that the prospective music
teacher is well-prepared in music performance. Studies in music
theory, music history, the music of world cultures, conducting,
orchestration, and technology provide a supportive background
that gives teachers the breadth and depth of knowledge they
need to succeed in this demanding occupation. The study of methodology
includes work in Orff-Schulwerk, Kodaly, and Dalcroze at the
elementary level, and the management and direction of music
programs at the secondary level. Field work in local schools
begins in the third year, and continues through the student
teaching experiences of the fifth year of study. The student
enters the last year of professional preparation with a high
level of musical competence and experience.
The Fifth Year
To gain admission to the fifth year of study required for certification,
students must pass the California Basic Education Skills test
and departmental exams in piano proficiency and sight-reading.
A state-mandated grade point average must also be achieved by
the candidate. The first semester of the final year is devoted
to course work and student teaching which is supervised by College
of Education faculty. For their final semester of student teaching,
which is supervised by the School of Music & Dance faculty,
students may select an emphasis in general, choral, or instrumental
music at a location approved by the Coordinator of Music Education.
M.A. with Music Education Emphasis
Students who have received state certification in music and
want to continue their studies can work toward the Master of
Arts degree in the SJSU School of Music and Dance. The program
includes a core curriculum studied by all master's candidates
and a thesis which is written during the final term. Those interested
in working toward the M.A. should contact the Coordinator of
Music Education Programs.
