ADVISING
INFORMATION FOR NEW UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN MUSIC
Welcome to the School of Music and Dance at San Jose State
University!
The following information is to assist you as you register
for classes before the beginning of the Fall semester; an
advisor will most likely not be available on-site during the
summer months. However, you may email Professor Joseph Frank
at franktenor@aol.com
in the event that you have questions after you have read the
information contained at this web site.
Call the music office at (408) 924-4673 and request degree
program information on your specific area(s) of interest (e.g.,
B.A. in piano performance), along with the print-outs "General
Information for Music Students" and "Checklist for
Music Students."
Be sure to consult the current catalog (2004-2006) for all
academic information. This catalog is available in hard copy
from the Spartan bookstore and also available at the web site.
All new students must be individually advised in their first
year in order to continue registration. Otherwise, a "hold"
will be placed on the student's future registration. Only
a music advisor can authorize the lifting of the advising
"hold."
ACTIVITIES - Examination Days - Prior to the First Day of
Classes.
1. All new students must take a placement audition
in their area of emphasis, e.g., piano, voice, electro-acoustic,
jazz, composition, strings, brass, winds, etc. Consult the
Schedule
of Classes for EXACT times and places. The Student
Handbook, accessable from this website, contains suggested
(other material is acceptable) audition material.
2. All TRANSFER students must take a music systems (theory/musicianship)
aural skills placement examination. Consult the Schedule
of Classes for EXACT time and place. Email Professor Brian
Belet for further information at bbelet@email.sjsu.edu.
3. All new undergraduate students should plan to attend the
advising/orientation session held the same day as applied
auditions .
INFORMATION FOR FRESHMEN and TRANSFER STUDENTS
In order to graduate in four years, music students must take
music classes every semester they are enrolled. Music students
seeking the B.A. degree and without any math or English restrictions
should plan to take 15-16 units per semester to accomplish
this goal. Note that 12 units is considered a full-time student.
The following is a recommended list of classes for a first-semester
freshman in the B.A. program without math or English remedial
classes. Note that all music students will register for applied
lessons and a major ensemble in every semester of enrollment,
up to eight semesters. Marching Band is not a major ensemble.
Composition, jazz/improvised music studies and electro-acoustic
students should consult the area coordinators for ensembles
in their areas.
