Michael Adduci

Michael Adduci teaches oboe and music theory at San José State University, and also at Chabot College in Hayward, California. He is a Doctoral candidate in oboe performance at the University of North Texas, where he studied with Charles Veazey. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in biology and music from the University of Idaho, and a Master’s degree in oboe performance from the University of North Texas. Michael is a member of the Santa Cruz County Symphony, and in addition he performs regularly with orchestras around the Bay area, including Symphony Silicon Valley, Opera San José, Ballet San José, the San José Chamber Orchestra, the Fremont Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Cruz Chamber Orchestra, and many others. When he is not teaching or performing he is also the proprietor of Adduci Oboe Reeds, working with clients around the United States and Canada.

Mr. Adduci's teaching emphasizes tone production and reed making. Technical facility is acquired through the study of melodic and technical etudes including the Ferling, Hite, Salviani and Sellner etudes among others. Tone production and phrasing are studied using the Barret oboe method and the Ferling etudes. Solo repertoire will cover all stylistic periods and national schools of composition. Additionally, students will learn the physiological factors at work in playing the oboe so that they can make informed decisions about correct playing techniques. Relaxation, rather than tension, is the key to a beautiful oboe sound.

Audition Requirements:
The audition candidate should prepare 10-15 minutes of music for the audition. Entire pieces are not required - individual movements are acceptable. The candidate should prepare a combination of fast and slow movements that showcase their technical and lyrical abilities. Examples of suitable repertoire:
