About the Position:

The School of Music & Dance has been preparing professional performers, composers and music educators longer than any other school in California. San José State University's applied studio faculty include some of this nations most gifted artists, ranging from Metropolitan Opera stars to some of the leading musicians in major Bay Area symphonies.

This position reports to the Director of the School of Music and Dance working independently under very limited supervision to support all computing and electronic equipment for labs, student/faculty and staff workstations, including all software applications and information technology security procedures in the School.

The incumbent provides technical solutions and expertise in defining School of Music and Dance computer access needs; constructs templates, "scripts" and programs to solve various hardware interfacing, data conversion, database and special application needs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provides system administration of the Music Building network servers including the maintenance, modification, and update of the School of Music and Dance website and content management systems.  Specifies, installs, and maintains digital hardware, software, and internet resources for the School of music and Dance.
- Provides desktop support all academic and administrative workstations as well as the adaptation of a wide variety of hardware and software products including those specific for music applications.
- Monitors the Music building network and works with campus IT support services in defining the School's specific network problems and requirements; maintains security on the workstations and implements University network, workstation and information accessibility policies as they are formulated.
- Provides maintenance and continual upgrading of equipment and software used in the School's Computer Assisted Instruction laboratories.
- Acts as building emergency team leader and the safety officer for the music building; implements regulations and works with University personal during safety checks; coordinates building evacuations during emergency drills.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field plus three years of full time professional experience in the electro-acoustic or sound engineering field required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Ability to work at the hardware level of CPUs, motherboards, memory, disc drives, power supplies, etc. as well as at the system level with such things as networked printers, firewalls, hubs, routers, and various kinds of servers.
- Ability to troubleshoot a variety of computer hardware and software in cases of contention and incompatibility.
- Ability to work on an electronic component level: skilled as a bench technician with the ability to evaluate, operate, troubleshoot and repair common as well as unique electronic devices used specifically in music performance and education.
- Ability to work on an electronic systems level: to plan and work within practical personnel, economic and building-space restraints.
- Knowledge in selecting specialized electronic devices to be used in an array and a complete system for use in a particular teaching environment, such as a computer laboratory, electro-acoustics studio, or a classroom audio-video playback system.
- Fully acquainted in the correct and safe use of a wide variety of metal and wood working tools in a shop environment to perform repairs and installations.
- Knowledgeable and skilled in live concert support in providing technical and sound support for electro-acoustic and traditional music concerts, conferences and festivals.
- Thorough knowledge of University methods, procedures and practices. Suggests and specifies possible acquisitions both verbally and in written reports.
- Knowledge purchasing electronic equipment and software for the School of Music & Dance.

The physical demands of this position are to lift, carry, and move equipment such as workstations, recording equipment, speakers, microphone stands, electric pianos, gamelans, chairs, desks, etc.  The position performs a wide variety of intricate mechanical and wiring procedures.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The work environment varies from a repair shop environment to "on-site" work such as offices with workstations, specialized electronic and recording studios, classroom sound and video installations, administrative offices, computer laboratories and concert halls.  Generally, equipment is usually set up, tested in the various shop areas, and then installed in the area of use.  Equipment that cannot be repaired on site is brought back to the shop areas for further repairs & modification.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Masters degree in computer science, electronic music/electro-acoustic or sound engineering preferred.
