Brass

The Brass Program of the SJSU School of Music and Dance is expanding rapidly and counts among its faculty some of the best brass instructors in the San Francisco Bay area. A variety of performing opportunities are available for students, including regular studio recitals and Listening Hour Concerts, which are organized by the School of Music and Dance and open to the public. A number of excellent student ensembles also are available, including various brass chamber music groups, the University bands, Symphony Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra and various jazz combos.

Trumpet or Cornet

Minimum of two movements from one of the following works:

French Horn

  • Four Concertos for Horn, Mozart

Trombone and Euphonium

  • Melodious Etudes For Trombone, Joannes Rochut (any etude)
  • and one the following (a slow and a fast movement):
    • Six Sonatas for Trombone and Piano, Galliard

    • Sonata in Bb Major, Vivaldi-Ostrander

Tuba

Are scholarships available?

Yes, scholarships are available. Scholarship awards are based upon performance level and the needs of the School. All music majors enrolled in the Spartan Marching Band receive an automatic supplemental scholarship award.

Are instruments available?

Yes. For a $30 use fee each semester, a student may choose from a variety of school instruments required for performance.

I want to become a music major, what should I do?

Speak with the Director of the School of Music and Dance in Music Room M-179.

When are band, brass ensemble and orchestra auditions?

Auditions for these ensembles are held during the two advising days prior to the first day of classes.

What should I play for the School of Music and Dance auditions?

Please refer to the School of Music and Dance website for information on audition repertoire specific to each brass instrument.
