Membership: The San Jose State University Symphony Orchestra is open to all university students and community members by audition. Performers may enroll in MUSC 153 as regular students or through open university. The orchestra is conducted by Dr.
Janet Averett.
Rehearsals: The symphony orchestra rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:20 both in the Concert Hall and Room 150. An extra dress rehearsal might be called. Those enrolled must attend all rehearsals and performances in order to receive credit.
Concerts: The orchestra presents two evening concerts each semester. The Fall 2007 concerts featured orchestral favorites by Brahms and Beethoven, showcased SJSU faculty member Dale Wolford in the Debussy Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. The late November concert featured seven annual student concerto-aria competition winners as well as the entire orchestra in the rousing Roman Carnival Overture by Berlioz. The March 2008 program features SJSU faculty member Victoria Lington in the Shostakovitch Second Piano Concert, a student brass trio and orchestra in a triple concerto by SJSU Physics professor and composer Brian Holmes and the Gershwin Cuban Overture. The May program will again showcase some of our wonderful student singers in the lovely Les Nuits d’Ete by Berlioz and the entire orchestra in the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. Concerts for the 2007-2008 season are at 7:30 on October 5, November 30, March 11 and May 2.
Auditions: If you are interested in joining this high caliber and fun ensemble, please contact Dr. Janet Averett at AverettJM@aol.com. Auditions will be held January 22 and 23. Sign up for a time on Room 253. Wind and percussion players who are music majors must sign up for ensemble auditions on Dr. Harris's door (Room 179). All string players must audition with Dr. Averett and can sign up on her door (Room 253). Audition repertory should include a short prepared piece, prepared orchestra literature as assigned and will consist of sightreading.All strings must audition for seating.
Prepared orchestral literature: String players should pick up a copy the Holmes Triple Concerto and the Cuban Overture after January 13. Shostakovitch will be ready after January 23.
