Janet Van Swoll



 Janet Van Swoll teaches Dance History, Movement Notation, Dance Appreciation and all levels of Ballet. Under her direction, the San Jose State University Dance Program became an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Dance. Her principal training in ballet was from Dimitri and Francesca Romanoff, for whom she also taught. Dimitri Romanoff was the regisseur for American Ballet Theatre for many years. Professor Van Swoll attended Butler University and graduated from UCLA. She completed her Master of Arts at San Jose State University and has done post graduate work in Labanotion at Mills College and Ohio State University. She is certifed by the Dance Notation Bureau to teach Elementary and Intermediate Labanotation and has been trained by the Dance Notation Bureau to reconstruct dances from the Labanotated score. She has restaged a dozen works from the Labanotated score, choreographed eleven productions for Opera San Jose, where she has also been a movement coach and teacher. She was a visiting professor in Dance at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts for the 1987-1988 academic years.
