Jazz Studies, Bass
John Shifflett taught Jazz Studies and directed big bands at
the University of Iowa while attending graduate school. He has
done countless studio sessions ranging from radio and TV jingles
to jazz and country and pop recordings. He has performed with
a variety of show business acts, including Frankie Avalon, Mel
Tormé, George Burns, Jerry Lewis, the Smothers Brothers, the
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Dinah Shore, and
Dionne Warwick. He has appeared with the San José Civic Opera
and the San José Pops Orchestra. His primary focus, however,
has always been jazz. He has performed with jazz greats Toshiko
Akiyoshi, Ernie Watts, John Zorn, Kurt Elling, Norma Winstone,
and Bobby Hutcherson. Shifflett performs locally with Smith
Dobson, the Paul Nagel Trio, Harvey Wainapel, Anton Schwartz,
Ann Dyer, Eric Crystal, Ray Brown's Great Big Band, Peter Apfelbaum's
Sextet, and many others.
